Dear Neighbor,
I am excited to share with you this news update about recent legislative developments and some of the work I am doing to represent our community in the California State Assembly.
Protecting California's Whales
On Friday, February 23rd, I announced the introduction of Assembly Bill 2298, legislation that will establish a statewide California Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies program. This program, modeled after the successful program in Santa Barbara County, will prevent fatal ship strikes on the endangered whale population and reduce harmful air emissions by incentivizing shipping companies to slow their speed along the California Coast. The bill is co-authored by Assemblymember Steve Bennett (D-Ventura) and Assemblymember Damon Connolly (D-San Rafael). Watch a clip from the press conference.
Recognizing Erica Flores as Woman of the Year
On March 1, I presented the 37th District Woman of the Year Award to Erica Jane Flores. Erica joins a select group of women leaders throughout California to be honored by the Legislature in commemoration of Women's History Month. Erica works tirelessly, every day, to make our community a better place. She is making a lasting impact that will inspire future generations of women - like her 6-year-old daughter. Serving as the CEO of People Helping People, Erica has been at the forefront of addressing critical needs and fostering community resilience. Erica also serves as an elected trustee for the college school district, in addition to serving on the boards of local nonprofits. Our community stands with pride for Erica, as her accomplishments uplift and inspire us all.
Free Tax Filing Service
On March 2nd, I co-hosted the Santa Maria Tacos and Taxes event, in partnership with Senator Monique Limón, United Way of Northern Santa Barbara County, Allan Hancock College and Golden State Opportunity. More than 100 community members received free tax filing services, including help claiming the California Earned Income Tax Credit. Senator Limón and I were happy to provide lunch for the program participants and the many dedicated volunteers.
There is still time to receive free tax preparation assistance from United Way's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA). Visit the My Free Taxes website to book an appointment for assistance if you qualify.
Out in the Community
