Bills Passed, Upcoming Events and More!

I am excited to share this news update about recent legislative developments and some of the work I am doing to represent our community and all of California.

Update From the Capitol

In my first year as a member of the California State Assembly, I am proud to announce eight of my authored bills have passed out of the Legislature and have been sent to Governor Newsom's desk for his signature. These legislative measures aim to enhance the quality of life for Central Coast residents and all Californians by addressing various important issues, including protecting the environment, strengthening consumer safeguards, expanding mental health care, supporting nonprofits and enhancing local disaster response capabilities. The Governor has until October 14 to sign or veto legislation.

Sidewalk Office Hours

This fall, I will be holding Sidewalk Office Hours in 12 communities across the Central Coast. These events will be held in Orcutt, Guadalupe, Goleta, Santa Barbara, Vandenberg Village, Lompoc, Solvang, Montecito, Summerland, Nipomo, Santa Maria and Buellton.

These meetings foster important community connections and address topics of great significance to our region. I enjoyed meeting with community members during my first Sidewalk Office Hours series in July and I am looking forward to more conversations in the months ahead.

Student Debt Webinar

Student Debt Webinar flyer

On August 22, I joined Senator Monique Limón, Assemblymember Steve Bennett and the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation in hosting a webinar to inform constituents with student loans about recent developments pertaining to student loan repayment. View the webinar. The webinar provided information about the California Student Borrower Bill of Rights, the status of federal student debt relief efforts, the upcoming return of federal student loan payments and how to avoid student loan scams. View the slide deck from the webinar. As your State Assemblymember, I will continue to advocate for increasing access to higher education. I'm proud of the work that our UC, CSU and community college systems do to extend access to students of all backgrounds, but I know that we can do even more. I would like to thank Next Gen Policy and the Campaign for California Borrowers' Rights for helping put on this timely and informative webinar.

California Coastal Cleanup Day

Saturday, September 23, is the 39th annual California Coastal Cleanup Day. This is an opportunity to take care of our coastline with your neighbors. This day is also an occasion to spread awareness about the health of our coastline. There are dozens of organized beach cleanups at locations throughout Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties. These events will take place from 9 a.m. - Noon on September 23. Learn more and sign up to participate. California Coastal Cleanup Day is a program of the California Coastal Commission, in partnership with many community organizations and sponsors.
