Covered California

On March 23, 2010, President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act. The Affordable Care Act will protect consumers, make coverage more affordable, and expand health care access. Starting January 2014, most Americans will be required to have health insurance or pay a penalty.

California was the first state in the nation to enact legislation to start implementing the Affordable Care Act. It created Covered California, a marketplace where Californians can buy health coverage that cannot be denied or canceled if they are sick or have pre-existing health conditions. Starting January 2014, Californians will have access to quality health coverage through Covered California, with pre-enrollment commencing in October 2013.

Time is running out to join the millions of Californians enrolled in Covered California plans by applying for coverage during the 2017 Open Enrollment which ends January 31. For coverage that begins in February, you must enroll by January 19.

If you are already insured through Covered California: renew your plan for 2018 from October 2017 through Dec. 15, 2017, for coverage beginning Jan. 1, 2018.

It is important to take a look at your health plan during the renewal period because plan options and rates could change each year, and you may qualify for a different amount of financial help — especially if things like your income, household size and address have changed since last year. Renewal is also a great time to update your information with Covered California and shop for new coverage.

To see your health plan options and rates, use the Shop and Compare Tool. Then either sign in to your Covered California online account, contact a Certified Insurance Agent or Certified Enrollment Counselor, or call Covered California at (800) 300-1506 (TTY: [888] 889-4500) to make the change.
